In 1990 the Director of the World Health Organisation proclaimed that Auricular (ear) Acupuncture is “probably the most developed and best documented, scientifically, of all the Microsystems of acupuncture and is the most practical and widely used.” It is based on principles similar to that of Reflexology in that the whole body is mapped onto the ear in the form of an inverted foetus. It was discovered in China around 5,000 years ago, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that French physician Dr Paul Nogier researched and advanced our understanding of this particular therapy. His research discovered over 100 points on the ear which, when stimulated, influence various corresponding organs and systems in our body. Auricular therapy has had great success in treating the problems of substance misuse, and is widely used in drug rehabilitation and the prison service. It is also a very useful adjunct to full body treatment, and essential in helping with stopping smoking and weight loss.
